The NBA is cyclical in nature just like any other North American league but may be dominated by fewer teams historically. We take a look at some teams that have a history of success, and others that remain NBA losers.
San Antonio have been in the mix every year since the turn of the millennium.
The Lakers & the Celtics dominated much of the last half of the 90’s, and have also been players since the turn of the century.
The Bulls were truly dominant in the Jordan years and Golden State are looking to emulate that feat.
Miami have had their time in the sun recently, similar to Detroit a quarter century or so ago.
New York has been a major player historically speaking but lost more than they won in the pressure cooker of the Finals.
Lebron’s Cavs have had their way in recent years and look to be in a position to make a few more Finals.
Going down the list the Houston Rockets, Hawks, Wizards, Supersonics/Thunder, Trail Blazers, Mavericks, & even the Bucks have given their fans a taste of the Finals!
However, there is a special group who have given their fans little to cheer about. Thirteen teams have played a combined Four Hundred & forty-seven (447) seasons & the best achievement was nine final appearances. The Suns, Jazz, Nets, Magic, have made the finals twice, Pacers once. The others; Clippers, Grizzlies, Bobcats/Hornets, Nuggets, Hornets/Pelicans, Raptors, and Timberwolves have all managed NO Final appearances.
They have collectively played for an average of 34.4 seasons not including this season and they have a combined 0 championships. In an ideal world they would have at least 15 championships between team statistically speaking. They have been to the finals 9 times but this falls short of the 30 they should have been a part of.
The Real question is why?
How can basically half the teams in the league of the past 20 years not had a real sniff at a championship?
The next question, will any ever win a championship? Denver, Clippers, Raptors, Grizzlies, Pacers, have all shown promise recently but will any get over the hump?
The talk this year has been all about the usual suspects; Warriors, Cavs, Celtics, Spurs, so can we rule out these Perennial Losers already.
The good news is that of the 16 teams that are in the current playoff picture, 7 of the teams are one of the Lucky 13. Could 2017 be the year?
The odds suggest it is still unlikely & that we could have the same discussion next year. But there is a slim chance that two of the teams could make some noise along the way.
The likeliest of the Lucky 13, the L.A. Clippers & Toronto Raptors are 32.00 & 38.00 respectively to win it all. The Raptors playing in the weaker Eastern conference are actually, 12.00 to win the East and represent in the final!
