It looks as though Red Star Belgrade isn’t satisfied with just making a contract offer to Troy Murphy (a story I broke last week here on blogNBAsketball). They are now interested in signing Memphis Grizzlies free agent power forward Leon Powe {no word on the financial terms}. Europe would be a good career move for Leon since he’s built for that kind of physical play. Powe appeared to be fully recovered from knee surgery last season and would bring a level of toughness sorely lacking for Crvena Zvezda. Coach Svetislav Pesic appears determined to upgrade the team’s frontline. TheĀ contract offer to Troy Murphy came just a week after the team signed small forward Adam Morrison. Leon Powe’s agent Aaron Goodwin was not available for comment.

Martin i don’t know what is your source but this is totally false information ….
1st of all Red Star Belgrade ( new name of the Fmp Zeleznik ) don’t play in Euroleague and Powe is not in any combinaton with them …
However Igor Rakocevic is closer than before and he might sign contract with Red Star Belgrade very soon .
Hi Igor, Thanks for chiming in. I apologize for the type-o about the Euroleague…we were also following the Josh McRoberts deal with Partizan today. As for Powe, let me clarify….no contract offer has been made (like the Troy Murphy offer I reported last week) nor is a deal imminent with Leon and Red Star. I know that Zvezda is very interested, but what Leon wants to do is still unknown. How interested is he in playing overseas right now? Would he take a deal starting at $250K U.S.?? I don’t know. But I am continuing to follow this story and will update when I get more info. As for Rakocevic, this would be a great pick-up. He’s been seriously considering it for quite some time now (let’s hope Darko Milicic is listening) . Thanks for the comments…..aj cujemo se

Its not new name of FMP… Only fan of Partizan could say such a stupid thing…
Igor Volkov=Grobar koji se zanima za nasa pojacanja…
Presmesan je…
Igor Volkov is a gravedigger. The name of the team is RED STAR BELGRADE. FMP does not exist.
I was hoping for a Powe return to the Celtics. The question with Leon is about his knees. If he is healthy he can really ball. The guy used to be a beast.
Bohemian,
There are very few guys I respect more than Leon Powe. He battled and did all the dirty work in his first two years in the league. Then he ripped his knee in the line of duty before getting that big payday. There are a lot of guys out there sitting at home living off bad contracts while a guy like Leon has to fight for a roster spot somewhere?? that’s weak. Some just don’t value toughness and heart like they do a nice jumper and sweet crossover. Rebounding and hustle are talents too. I thought Lionel Hollins would’ve played him more in the playoffs last season, would’ve loved to see him battle ex-teammate K-Perk. On a sidenote, I always thought Leon Powe was Jason Richardson’s long lost brother…don’t they look alike?

For my readers here in the U.S., let me clarify:
In Belgrade there are 2 teams (Red Star & Partizan), and as you can see you’re either a fan of one or the other. The term gravedigger is a literal translation of the Serbian word “grobar” which is what Partizan fans call themselves. Basketball is king in Serbia. Their passion for the game is uncomparable. Hvala ljudi!
