Evident in the Lakers’ loss at Western Conference-leading Memphis Friday night was that Pau Gasol didn’t play in the entire 4th quarter.
If you’re surprised by this then you’ve never seen Mike D’Antoni coach in the NBA (Denver, Phoenix, New York)…and you definitely aren’t reading my blog.
The Lakers are now 0-4 on the road heading into a revenge game at Dallas Saturday. Regardless of the team’s record, Pau’s days on the team are numbered.
Kobe had some interesting comments about his Spanish brother following the Lakers’ loss at Sacramento earlier this week: ”he’s used to laboring up the floor, coasting a little bit…..in this offense, you gotta really put the motor on.”
Then, after Gasol’s benching at Memphis, a frustrated head coach Mike D’Antoni said this of Pau’s lack of aggression: “eh…he is who he is.”
When asked for his thoughts, Pau said “All of my looks are jumpshots…I’d like to see something closer to the basket.” Funny, he had those same looks under Mike Brown the past year. He then added, “it’s not my fault” pointing to the hot shooting of Antawn Jamison.
I beg to differ.
If you watched the Suns or Knicks under Mike D’Antoni then you know that the last thing he wants on the court is a seven-foot power forward who doesn’t even look at the rim on offense.
Kobe put the final touches on Pau’s recent benching when asked for his thoughts….. ”I didn’t even realize it to be honest with you.”
See, Pau has already been forgotten in L.A.
Mitch, make the call.
