Dirk Nowitzki will not touch a basketball for the next 6 weeks…..but, for the new-look Dallas Mavericks, it may just have been 6 months.
The NBA’s MVP in 2007 has sat out all but the first game this season (coincidentally, in Germany) due to consistent swelling in his right knee. He and the team have finally decided that arthroscopic surgery is necessary.
While this is not considered a major procedure, the time missed with his new teammates will hurt a lot more than the surgery. Dallas will play Elton Brand in Nowitzki’s starting 4-spot…oh, speaking of Brand, the team has a brand new backcourt of Darren Collison and O.J. Mayo. Center Chris Kaman also was a free agent addition this summer.
I guess Mavs fans can wait a couple of months for Dirk Nowitzki to return…..Mark Cuban has been asking them to wait for summer free agency for years (Deron? Dwight??…errr Delonte).

No one expects the Mavs to do anything worthwhile this season. Might as well rest Dirk as much as possible. They could use a lottery pick.
