With the money usually all dried up, September is the time that a lot role players take the scraps and settle on a city for next season.
Matt Barnes, a role player in every sense, has decided to join the Los Angeles Clippers on a veteran minimum deal. Blake Griffin, Chauncey Billups, and Chris Paul reportedly led the recruiting effort. Matt also received some interest from the Miami Heat.
This move should shock no one…..well, other than the LAPD.
Matt is a former UCLA Bruin (and L.A. Clipper), he played last season with the ‘down-the-hall’ Lakers, and his fiancee is fully entrenched on the roster of Basketball Wives Los Angeles (reason #3 being the strongest).
While playing time will be scarce with the likes of Caron Butler, Lamar Odom, Grant Hill, and Jamal Crawford ahead of him Barnes’ attitude and timely cheap shots will be a welcome addition to LAC. This is a team that thrived off of the attitude of Chris Paul last season. With the departure of Reggie Evans to Brooklyn, a guy like Matt will bring much-needed nastiness to the Clipper locker room.
Lamar must be excited to play with his old buddy, “the action figure,” Matt Barnes.
For those of you counting, like me, this move brings the number of ex-Lakers on the Clipper bench to four (Odom, Butler, Turiaf, & Barnes)…five, if you count Chris Paul.
See you November 2nd.
