Orlando Magic center Dwight Howard flew to L.A. yesterday to receive a second opinion on his troublesome back. The result of his trip was a shocking diagnosis: herniated disc, out indefinitely. His availability for the playoffs is in serious doubt.
Unlike Amar’e Stoudemire of the New York Knicks, who I recently wrote about, I do expect Howard to return to full strength one day. Dwight has no history of back issues, whatsoever.
Disc injuries were once rare in the NBA due to the high quality of training staffs in the league. However, this season they’ve ramped up considerably.
Commissioner David Stern and the owners should address this issue as their jam-packed 66-game season may be costing many players their careers…..
p.s.- ESPN, it’s spelled herniated disC…step it up.
